BEIJING, Oct. 23, 2009 -- Highlights of major Chinese newspapers Friday:

1. China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin Thursday met with Xavier Bertrand, the Secretary General of the Union for a Popular Movement party (UMP) of France, in Beijing. Jia pledged to work with France to advance the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations.
2. Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang Thursday met with heads of some of the delegations attending the third meeting of ministerial level officials of the executive committee of the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP) in Beijing. Li said that the peaceful use of nuclear energy should be based on safety, and it requires joint effort of the international community.
3. Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang Thursday addressed the Strategic Forum for U.S.-China Clean Energy Cooperation, which gathered more than 300 guests including former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, high-ranking officials from both governments and representatives of international organizations.
Li said that China and the United States saw great potential on the clean energy cooperation. Both countries have enjoyed increasing common interests on handling climate change and pushing forward sustainable development.

1. China is able to achieve its annual economic growth target of eight percent, according to Li Xiaochao, spokesman of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). Statistics show that China's gross domestic product (GDP) increased 7.7 percent in January-September. The growth rate was up 6.1 percent on year in the first quarter, 7.9 percent in the second quarter, and 8.9 percent in the third quarter.
2. A forum entitled Tibet: Development Prospects and Cooperation Opportunities opened in Rome Thursday alongside a two-day discussion.
